the top set within a wide rectangular frame enclosed within a further edge, the edge of the frame moulding downward and inward to a shaped beaded-edged apron carved on each side with a pair of chilong, each cabriole leg with a mythical beast mask and corresponding claws

Powerfully carved with dragons and mythical beast masks, the current kangji is notable for its combination of clean lines and meticulous rendering of details.


Compare one similar but slightly larger example formerly from the collection of Wang Shixiang and now preserved in the Shanghai Museum, illustrated in Wang Shixiang, Mingshi jiaju yanjiu / Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture, Beijing, 2018, p. 77, no. B13.


几面周邊起攔水線,冰盤沿,有束腰。齊牙條,浮雕雙螭龍遙遙相對,綴捲草紋。腿子肩部雕獸面,毛髮飛揚,雙目炯炯,栩栩如生。三彎腿下雕虎爪足,上下呼應,匠心獨運。


此炕几造型古樸,雕工粗曠有力。王世襄舊藏一近例,尺寸稍大,現藏上海博物館,錄於王世襄,《明式家具研究》,北京,2018年,頁77,編號乙13。
