elegantly constructed with shallow everted sides in the shape of nine overlapping mallow petals, covered overall in an attractive chocolate-brown lacquer, the base inscribed in red paint with a two-character mark, Japanese wood box

With its distinctively shaped and slightly overlapping petals, the mallow flower was one of the most popular forms for lacquerware of the 10th to the 14th centuries. The flower represented longevity and fulfilling life and was reproduced in metal wares, ceramics such as Ding, Ru and guan wares, as well as lacquer.
