Study of a Child

signed JOHN twice (lower right)

oil on panel

unframed: 49.5 by 27.5cm.; 19½ by 10¾in.

framed: 57.5 by 36 cm.; 22½ by 14in.

This work is in very good condition. The panel is sound. Artist's pinholes at all four corners. Minor frame abrasion along all four edges, one associated nick to the center of the upper edge. The pigments are bright and fresh. Two minor scratches to the surface near the figure's proper left arm. Under UV light: a thick layer of varnish obscures a closer reading. There is a possible fleck of retouching in the figure's hair but no other inpainting is apparent.

Held in an ornate black frame.
