Acquired directly from the artist in Cholamandal Artist’s Village, Chennai, 2014
Born in Tamil Nadu in 1940, P.S. Nandhan studied at the Madras School of Arts and Crafts before permanently moving to the Cholamandal Artists' Village. He started experimenting with new and different materials such as bronze, brick, wood, granite, clay and sheet metal. Also an accomplished draftsman and painter, Nandan and his works are an exceptional example of the Madras Art Movement. Artists such as Devi Prasad Roy Chowdhury and later K.C.S. Paniker established this movement and strove towards a new and modern aesthetic, deliberately moving away from the traditions of the colonially established art practices of the past.
