Africa Dances

signed and dated 1971 (lower right), inscribed ‘From Ben Enwonwu, With Compliments, To His Excellency, The Brazilian Ambassador’ (verso)

watercolour and bodycolour on cardboard

100 by 74cm., 39¼ by 29¼in.

Framed: 110 by 84cm., 43¼ by 33in.

Structure: The work is executed on card. There are several repaired tears throughout the work, these tears appear stable. The most significant repair runs vertically, through the length of the work. Other examples include a horizontal tear which measures approx. 40cm to the centre right of the work, and another measuring approx. 15cm to the centre left of the work. Further examples elsewhere. These repairs are visible on both the recto and verso. The edges of the card are cut, but uneven in certain places. There are four pin holes, one to each corner, as well as light creasing to the card in places.

Surface: The surface of the work exhibits minor abrasions and moderate acid discoloration throughout. The acid discolouration is more apparent on the reverse of the work, where it can be considered moderate to significant. The work exhibits a border of discolouration due to a previous framing attempt. This border also exhibits minor abrasions and residue. There are a handful of tears/handling marks along the edges of the work.

This work is framed.
