Description

Flemish, 18th century

Busts of children

white marble, on variegated marble socles

height of busts: 14 in.; 35.6 cm.

height of socles: 4 3/4  in.; 12.1 cm.

This charming pair of carvings of children, with their parted lips, almond-shaped eyes, flowing curls, and dimpled cheeks, can be compared to a pair of 18th century Flemish marble reliefs of children sold at Sotheby's London on 24 October 2017 (lot 255). Their animated expressions and detailed irises are especially comparable to the works of Jan Pieter van Baurscheit the Elder (Rheinbach 1669-1728 Antwerp) and his son Jan Pieter van Baurscheit the Younger (Antwerp 1699-1768), both of whom were active in Antwerp during the first half of the 18th century.1
