and Michel Anguier

Eu 1613 – 1686 Paris

Bacchus and Amphitrite

bronze, on later gilt and painted wood bases

heights of each bronze: 15 and 14 4/5 in.; 38.1 and 37.6 cm.

heights of bases: 5 1/2 in.; 14 cm.

These fine casts are copies after Louis Garnier's Bacchus, conceived during the second half of the 17th century, and Michel Anguier's Amphitrite, created circa 1652. While these compositions descend from different artists, they were often placed together as a "false pair" during the 18th and 19th centuries due to their similar sizes, poses, and facial expressions.
