Description
After Barthélémy Prieur (Berzieux 1536- 1611 Paris)
French, late 18th century
Henry IV and Marie de Médicis
bronze, on brass-inlaid ebonized socles
heights 9 1/4 and 9 3/8 in.; 23.5 by 23.8cm.
Another pair of these popular models are in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (inv. no. 81.22.1 and 81.22.2), and in the museum of Pau, (on loan from the Louvre). A pair with nearly identical socles was also in the collection of David Daniels.
In recent decades, the scholar Regina Seelig-Teuwen has conducted extensive research on Prieur's statuettes, including the King and Queen, which has expanded our knowledge of Prieur's sustained popularity well after his death and the existence of later casts of his most revered models. The refined details in Marie Medicis' hair and in the King’s uniform suggest a later dating of the casts, probably late 18th century.
