The present lot is after an aquatint painted by Thomas Whitcombe who copied a sketch from John Christian Shetky.1 It recounts the battle between the French Navy and British Navy on February 7, 1813 off the coast of Africa at the Isles of Loss. Fought during the night, both sides experienced significant casualties and ultimately resulted with neither side claiming victory.
