The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.

This work has not been restored for many years. The work is extremely dirty, and layers of old varnish have yellowed noticeably. The panel is made of three pieces of wood joined vertically. The two original joins appear to be stable, but there is a vertical crack running through the window on the right that is slightly active and should be addressed. There is another crack about 1 ½ inches from the left edge, which is visible from the center of the left edge to the lower left corner.

The thick varnish does not allow for easy identification of retouching under ultraviolet light. Close examination with the naked eye shows that the lighter colors of the figure and beautifully painted elements surrounding him are un-abraded and in very good condition. It is likely that restorations would be revealed if the work is cleaned, particularly in the very darkest colors and along the repaired cracks to the panel.

Although the work should be carefully restored, it seems to be in very good condition overall.
