Johann Nikolaus Grooth was the son of Johann Cristoph Grooth, court painter and composer at Württemberg, and brother of painter Johann Friedrich Grooth. The brothers trained with their father and studied the collection in the electoral gallery in Ludwigsburg. Johann Nikolaus worked as a restorer before his career as a portraitist in Switzerland, where he moved in 1759 and where he likely painted this young girl.
