Luigi Querena took after his father, Lattanzio, a history painter, and enrolled at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice at age twelve, after which he trained under view and architectural painter Federico Moja (1802 - 1885). He specialized in vedute like the present lots, earning a reputation for reviving the subjects made popular by Canaletto. This prominently signed and dated pair of canvases dates to the beginning of Querena's maturity.
