The Crucifixion of St. Peter

oil on canvas

canvas: 30 by 22 in.; 76.2 by 55.9 cm.

framed: 37 by 28 1/2 in.; 94 by 72.4 cm.

The canvas is lined and stable on its stretcher with a slight buckle in the center. The image is legible but has been flattened, possibly due to relining, and the varnished has discolored throughout, causing some areas of darkened varnish or blanching, such as the lower left corner. A few spots of loss and flaking are present in the bottom half of the composition and the right edge has been abraded or thinned, but the paint layer is currently stable. Under UV inspection, the varnish is milky and difficult to read through, but repairs are visible surrounding old losses or damage to the canvas that are also visible to the naked eye, such as 3 spots in the lower half and one upper right. Offered in a decoratively carved wood frame with faux ivory decoration and a gilt inner liner.
