Still life with cherries, plums, raspberries and other fruits in a basket, with a yellow bird

oil on panel

panel: 19 by 25 1/4 in.; 48.3 by 64.1 cm.

framed: 23 by 29 1/8 in.; 58.4 by 74 cm.

The panel is almost flat with a very slight convex bow and is stable. The still life image reads well under the varnish, which has caused speckles of discoloration throughout the table. A very thin crack in the wood grain is faintly visible starting at the center right edge, but it is stable and not distracting. Under UV inspection, two campaigns are visible: the earlier to address larger areas in the dark background behind groups of leaves and fruits, and the more recent just a few scattered dots of losses in the left half of the panel. Painting can hang in its present state. Offered in a simply carved giltwood frame.

Although known in his lifetime as a painter of religious scenes, Dorival is now better known as a painter of still lifes, most of which feature a basket of fruit and a bird, like the present lot. Only two signed works by Dorival are known. We are grateful to Eric Coatalem for confirming the attribution on the basis of photographs.
