Paris 1614 - 1677

A still life with a skull, a music book, a snuffed-out candle, a bouquet of dying flowers and other vanitas objects on a table

oil on canvas

canvas: 18 1/2 by 22 in.; 47 by 55.9 cm.

framed: 26 by 29 3/4 in.; 66 by 75.6 cm.

Anonymous sale, New York, 28 January 1999, lot 388, where unsold and acquired privately after the sale by the present owner (as Renard de Saint-André).
This vanitas still life is intended to remind the viewer of the transient nature of human life. Symbols alluding to this include the skull, the candle which has been snuffed out, the wilting flowers, the pocket watch, and the pile of coins, which are symbolic of vain, earthly pursuits.
