A still life with a skull, a music book, a snuffed-out candle, a bouquet of dying flowers and other vanitas objects on a table

oil on canvas

canvas: 18 1/2 by 22 in.; 47 by 55.9 cm.

framed: 26 by 29 3/4 in.; 66 by 75.6 cm.

The canvas has been relined and is coated in a thick, glossy varnish. The paint layer has been well preserved and the jewel-toned colors remain. There is some thinness in the background but the details remain thick and fluid, particularly in the light reflections on the candlestick and watch. Under ultraviolet light one can see careful retouching which is mostly strengthening darker shadowed areas, such as in the lower right beneath the book, in the shadows of the vase and flowers, and in the shadows beyond the candlestick. These are not visible to the naked eye, and overall the canvas presents very nicely. Offered in a carved gilt wood frame.

Anonymous sale, New York, 28 January 1999, lot 388, where unsold and acquired privately after the sale by the present owner (as Renard de Saint-André).
This vanitas still life is intended to remind the viewer of the transient nature of human life. Symbols alluding to this include the skull, the candle which has been snuffed out, the wilting flowers, the pocket watch, and the pile of coins, which are symbolic of vain, earthly pursuits.
