Still life of flowers and fruits, including pomegranates, peaches, and grapes

oil on canvas

canvas: 32 5/8 by 38 1/4 in.; 82.9 by 97 cm.

framed: 39 by 44 3/8 in.; 99.1 by 112.7 cm.

The canvas has an old glue relining. The painting is in very "fresh" condition and has not been restored in some time. Under a dirty and yellowed varnish, the still-life elements are beautifully preserved, as is the associated brushwork and impasto in this area. The paint surface has lifted in the darks of the background around the still-life, and this has led to some associated scattered losses, but these are minor and are primarily in the background. A small repaired puncture (about 1 by 1 inch) in the lower left corner is reinforced on the reverse with putty. Not much is visible under UV light, partly because the varnish is thick and also partly because many of the still-life elements are well retained. This painting is recommendable, but will require restoration. A fresh relining, cleaning, and some scattered restorations and retouching will transform the painting. Offered in a 19th or early 20th century giltwood frame with some scattered losses and damages.
