Sassoferrato 1609 - 1685 Rome

Madonna and Child with the rose

oil on canvas, in a painted oval

canvas: 24 1/4 by 29 in.; 61.5 by 73.6 cm.

framed: 31 by 36 1/4 in.; 78.7 by 92.1 cm.

The canvas is lined and stable on its stretcher. The image reads very well beneath clear varnish and no retouching is visible to the naked eye. Under UV inspection, retouching is visible throughout, and is concentrated in larger areas of repair such as near the Virgin's hand to address a possible tear or loss, along the bottom edge, two areas in the right background, and a repair at top center. Smaller, finely applied retouching is visible throughout the figures and curtain. The painting has been well restored and can hang in its present state. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame with oval inset.
