Christ as the Man of Sorrows

oil on panel, in an engaged frame

painted surface: 13 3/4 by 9 1/4 in.; 34.7 by 23.5 cm.

with engaged frame: 16 7/8 by 12 3/8 in.; 42.9 by 31.4 cm.

The following condition report has been provided by Matthew Hayes of Pietro Edwards Society of Art Conservation, 336 West 37th Street, Suite 1580, New York, NY 10018, 212-457-8956, mh@edwards-society.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.

The panel is intact, and the reverse has what may be an original coating. A single wormhole in the background of the composition at the upper right suggests slight earlier woodworm activity.

Many passages of the paint appear quite well preserved, including the crown of thorns, hair, and modeling of the torso. There is some wear in the shadows and along the edges of cracks in Christ's body, and scattered small points of mechanical damage throughout. Retouched losses are present in the blue background and the chest, and smaller ones in the face. Some filling and retouching has been done along the edges of the composition to the frame. The halo has lost any gilding it may have once had. A pentimento is evident in the proper left shoulder.

The varnish is relatively glossy but does not saturate the paint in the darks. A few dark accretions pepper the surface.

Careful cleaning and retouching would greatly improve the appearance of this painting.

The frame was perhaps originally an engaged one but has been adapted to be an independent construction. Its gilding is worn, and mechanical damage is evident throughout.
