A monkey

oil on canvas

canvas: 26 1/2 by 20 in.; 67.3 by 50.9 cm.

framed: 34 3/4 by 28 in.; 88.3 by 71.1 cm.

The canvas has been relined and is stable, though the lining is somewhat tight. There is a thick, glossy varnish which presents nicely except for two small scratches, one beneath the monkey's collar and one over his left shoulder in the background. These are visible to the naked eye but appear to just be in the varnish layer. Under ultraviolet light one can see scattered retouching throughout the canvas, mostly in the background, though some in the monkey as well. This retouching appears to be addressing thinness in the middle tones and background and is not bothersome to the naked eye. Offered in a carved giltwood frame.
