oil on copper

copper: 12 ¾ by 9 ⅞ in.; 32.4 by 25.1 cm.

framed: 18 ¼ by 15 ⅞ in.; 46.4 by 40.3 cm.

The copper support is flat and stable. The image reads well beneath the varnish with the bold colors of the fire retained. Minor frame abrasion is visible at the top of the right edge, and at the top left corner the paint or retouching has discolored. A small circular repair is visible in the center of the sky. Under UV inspection, the varnish is milky and impedes further inspection of any retouching present. The painting can hang in its present state. Offered in an ebonized wood frame with gilt inner liners.

Saint Rose of Viterbo was a thirteenth-century member of the third Franciscan order that vocally supported the Pope despite growing opposition. She was renowned for her mystical powers, and in 1250 she famously expelled a sorceress from Vitorchiano, near Viterbo, by standing, unscathed, on a burning pyre for three hours. The clock tower in the background of this composition closely resembles the tower of the town hall still standing in Vitorchiano today.
