Follower of Sir Anthony van Dyck
Portrait of Anne Russell (née Carr), Countess of Bedford (1615 - 1684), three-quarter length
oil on canvas, unframed
canvas: 50 ½ by 40 in.; 128.3 by 101.6 cm.
The canvas is lined and stable on its stretcher. The portrait image reads well beneath the varnish, which is slightly streaky in dark areas of the background but not distracting. Craquelure is present throughout and is stable. Under UV inspection, the varnish is milky but some older retouching can be discerned, such as to address 2 tears to the upper right of the sitter's head, in the left part of the background, on the bottom of the column at right and on the bottom of her face. The painting can hang in its present state. Offered unframed.
