Portrait of a gentleman with a collar, half length

oil on canvas

canvas: 32 by 25 ⅝ in.; 81.3 by 65.1 cm.

framed: 35 ¼ by 29 ⅛ in.; 89.5 by 74 cm.

The canvas has been lined and is stable on its stretcher. The overall image reads clearly overall, despite the visible loss to the left of the figure's face. There is a network of craquelure most visible in his costume, and some of these have slightly tented with age, though they appear stable. There are some broadly applied areas of modern restoration to the figure's face, hair, and in the contiguous areas in the upper right background, possibly to address old losses and repairs. There are a few other old scattered spots of restoration in the background, at the edges, and in his lower costume.  Inspection under UV reveals these aforementioned restorations, as well as some additional small dots here and there in the figure and his costume. Offered in a modern gilt frame with some nicks and losses.
