bears inscription upper left: F. Hals

oil on canvas

canvas: 27 ¼ by 22 ⅜ in.; 69.2 by 56.8 cm.

framed: 35 ¼ by 30 ¾ in.; 89.5 by 78.1 cm.

The canvas is lined and is stable on its stretcher. The painting reads well overall, and the colors are vibrant. There are some scattered spots of faintly discolored restoration along the upper edge. Inspection under UV reveals a varnish that fluoresces unevenly. There is some some broadly applied retouching and strengthening in the costume, primarily in the darks, as well as in the shadowed half of the figure's face. There are spots of restoration in both of his eyes, as well as some spots in the shadows of the jug. Offered in a decorative gilt frame.

This painting seems to come closest in style and handling to the work of Christian van Couwenbergh, although the composition seems to have visual connections to the work of Werner van den Valckert, particularly in his Portrait of a Young Girl with Pancakes in a Window, dated 1624.1
