Portrait of a gentleman, in a grey cloak, resting his left arm on the base of a column

oil on canvas

canvas: 27 ½ by 22 ½ in.; 69.9 by 57.2 cm.

framed: 34 ¾ by 30 ⅛ in.; 88.3 by 76.5 cm.

The canvas appears to have an old glue lining, and it is taut and stable on its stretcher. The painting reads well overall, though it has not been restored in some time. The varnish is discolored and the surface is somewhat dirty. There is a very fine pattern of craquelure across the surface, and some of the details in the upper right corner have sunk with age. Inspection under UV reveals a thick and milky varnish. More recent spots of restoration are limited, including one spot in the lower foreground, one to repair an old restored puncture in the upper left, and a few strokes in the sky. There appears to have been an older campaign of restoration to attend to the hair of the figure at right, as well as some of the darks of his costume. There appears to be some more broadly applied strokes, possibly only strengthening, in the darker details of the background. Offered in a gilt frame with some decorative elements.
