Forno di Canale 1709-1784 Treviso

A wooded river landscape with ruins and figures

oil on canvas

canvas: 31 ⅜ by 42 ⅞ in.; 80 by 108.9 cm.

framed: 36 ½ by 48 in.; 92.7 by 121.9 cm.

The canvas is lined and stable on its stretcher. The image reads well overall beneath a discolored and dirty varnish. While some areas have been slightly thinned, there are some passages in which the impasto from the loose brushwork is still well-preserved. There is one restored repair in the background to the left of the figure fishing at lower left, and there is a small restored repair in the upper right background. Inspection under UV reveals some broadly applied retouching here and there, primarily to the darks of the foliage, lower foreground, and the architecture left of center. There are some additional scattered strokes in the figures and animals, as well as some here and there in she sky. Some of these retouches have discolored and are visible to the naked eye. Offered in a gilt carved modern frame.
