Swiftly dancing across the triptych with a spellbinding lyricism, the sensuous color fields and expressive swathes of color in Untitled (Triptych) (Lot 6208) typify the painterly finesse of Jose Joya. Executed in 1977, this rare and eloquent composition embraces the core principles of American Abstract Expressionism through the delicate medium of ceramic.

Wrought with subtle tensions and complex rhythms, Untitled (Triptych) displays with great acuity the artist’s mastery of the palette. Rendered in a soothing base of whites, creams and browns enlivened with warmer hues and romantic red tones, the present lot embodies the emotions and inner psyche of the artist. Joya ensconces these color fields with graceful black tones, recalling the calligraphic gesticulations found in his oil works. These spontaneous, linear forces create the illusion of shadows while simultaneously providing a sense of stability to the composition.

A renowned pioneer and prominent member of the Thirteen Moderns, Joya has long been celebrated as one of the first modernists in his nation to venture into abstraction, marking a distinct departure from his contemporaries. Born in 1931 in Manila, the salient visionary graduated from the University of Philippines School of Fine Arts before he earned a scholarship to study in Madrid at the Instituto de Cultura Hispanica. He was later awarded a Fulbright-Smith Mundt scholarship which allowed him to pursue masters at the Cranbrook Academy in Michigan. In the USA, he resonated with the American contemporary movements that were gaining international prominence and produced dynamic works while in the frenzy of Action Painting. Eventually, this quintessential gestural style not only resulted in a personal dialogue for Joya, but it would later represent the collective consciousness of the Philippines.

Joya dedicated his life to capturing the whims of his vivid imagination, from intuitions, reveries and emotions, through the lens of abstract forms. Eight years after his death, he was deemed a National Artist for his groundbreaking efforts in pioneering abstraction in the Philippines.

“…the artist is concretizing his need for communication. He has an irresistible urge to reach that level of spiritual satisfaction and to project what he is and what he thinks through his work.” - Jose Joya
