woodblock print, from the series Views of Fuji from the Eastern Capital and Calligraphic Models for Each Character in the Kana Syllabary (Nanatsu iroha toto fuji zukushi), signed Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga, censor's seal Kinugasa (Kinugasa Fusajiro) and Murata (Murata Sahei), published by Ebiya Rinnosuke (Kaijudo), 8th month 1852

The actor Arashi Kichisaburo III (1821-1864) strikes a dramatic pose performing as the wrestler Inuta Kobungo Yasuyori, one of the ‘eight dogs’ in the epic tale Nanso satomi hakkenden (Biography of the eight dogs) by Takizawa Bakin (1767-1848). Behind him is an inset landscape scene depicting the view of Mount Fuji from a teahouse at Meguro.
