The heritage of Sotheby’s illustrious woodblock print sales continues this May 18th – 25th with Japanese Woodblock Prints. The online sale includes the property from an extensive American private collection, offering an eclectic and scholarly overview of colour woodblock printing in Japan from the late 18th century to the modern day. A selection of early print masters will be offered alongside the works of Katsushika Hokusai and his pupils, a group of fine surimono and aizuri-e, and works by Utagawa Hiroshige. Prints from the Meiji period range from a charming selection of kuchi-e to the vivacious and exuberant compositions of Kawanabe Kyosai and Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. We are also delighted to showcase a wide variety of desirable designs from the early 20th century shin hanga and sosaku hanga movements.

Business or Trade Buyers are not affected by this change where the purchase has been made in the business or trading name.

(Sotheby’s will only be able to arrange shipments and exports with Sotheby’s approved shippers. Private buyers who arrange a collection and export directly with a shipper will be charged VAT at the applicable rate and will not be able to claim a VAT refund).
