woodblock print, from the series Men of Ready Money with True Labels Attached, Kuniyoshi Fashion (Kuniyoshi moyo shofuda tsuketari genkin otoko), signed Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga, with artist's paulownia seal, censor's seal Hama (Hama Yahei), published by Ibaya Kyubei (Kinseido), 1845

From a series of ten known designs of otokodate (‘street-knights’), or chivalrous men who help the weak and fight the strong. This print is a portrait of the kabuki hero and Edo otokodate Goshaku Somegoro playing a shakuhachi (bamboo flute) and wearing a kimono with a motif of melon plants.
