Description

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)

Arimatsu Tie-dyed Cloth at the Takeya Sahei Storefront (Arimatsu shiboriTakeya Sahei misesaki)

Edo period, 19th century

woodblock print, signed Toto Ichiryusai Hiroshige zu, privately published circa 1844-54

Obaiban (double oban):

35 x 46.5 cm.

The omission of a publisher or censor seal on this print suggests that it was privately commissioned by the Takeya Sahei store itself as an advertisement. Sited along the Tokaido, the post town of Arimatsu was celebrated for its local tie-dye fabrics known as Arimatsu shibori, which was often celebrated in Hiroshige's woodblock prints among other artist's at the time.
