stamped Degas (lower right)

black and blue crayon on paper

24 by 32.1cm., 9½ by 12⅝in.

Framed: 43.5 by 51cm., 17⅛ by 20⅛in.

Executed circa 1887-89.

The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Galerie Brame & Lorenceau.

Executed on cream laid paper, laid down on an extremely thin sheet of restorer's paper, and hinged to the mount in two places along the upper edge. The left and upper edges are deckled and the lower edge is slightly unevenly cut (none of which is visible when framed). The sheet is slightly time-stained and there is a small square of pale discolouration to the upper left corner. There are a few nicks and tiny supported tears to parts of the extreme edges, a tiny repair just below the blue rider's hand, and a pinprick-sized hole just below the stamped signature. There are a few tiny paper remnants just above the blue rider's proper right shoulder. There is some minor creasing to the right edge and some handling marks and light surface dirt in places. This work is in overall good condition.
