The movement is in working condition at the time of cataloguing. The date function is working properly. The MK 2 dial is very clean with a extremely minor hairline below 11 o'clock. The lumes have aged to a nice ivory and are all consistent. The bezel with minor signs of wear at places and specifically toward the 25 mark. The bezel has faded slightly. Minor signs of tarnishing is visible underneath the crystal and on the edge of the dial. The band with minor signs of wear at places. Underneath the lugs with minor surface wear from removing the lugs. The case back with signs of wear throughout. The case remains proportionate, however it has possibly been polishing slightly previously. The correct bracelet and endlinks is in good overall condition with minor signs of wear at places. Overall a very nice example.

Please note that the movement has not been tested for the accuracy of time and may need a service at the buyer's expense. Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement and we do not guarantee the authenticity of any individual component parts since subsequent repairs and restoration work may have resulted in the replacement of original parts.

Launched in 1967, the “Single Red” was the first Submariner model to feature a date function. Highly collectable for its unique red letter, the reference was only available for approximately 7 short years and collectors today have identified 6 types of dials available for the reference. The present example is fitted with a MK II meter first dial which is period correct to the “long five” bezel, case and bracelet.
