The reference 5088 was made in celebration of Patek Philippe’s 175th anniversary—a grand milestone largely deserving of a grand design, for perhaps one of the first times in the series’ history. Part of the Rare Handcrafts series, the present watch is a highly exclusive model.

What sets this particular piece apart is the pristine decorative craftwork of the dial. The current reference comes with two extremely unique dial designs: the present 5088P (2014) shows one dial variation, while the later reference 5088-100P (2016) shows the other. Comprised of two of the most complex design techniques, this piece displays a chased, silver floral motif in the foreground, and a grooved, champlevé-enameled black base in the back. Champlevé is a highly technical enamel process whereby the surface looking to be enameled is first carved, engraved, etched, or stamped with a chosen design. Next, powdered enamel is filled into the height of the cell walls and later smoothed over, thereby highlighting the design and bringing it to life. Collectively, the rarity, beauty, and exquisite craftsmanship exhibited by this present Calatrava makes it not only a highly celebrated piece, but also an ultimate horological masterpiece.
