Antide Janvier (1751-1835) was one of France’s most gifted clockmakers. A mechanical genius from an early age, the movement of the present lot was made when he was 16 years old, shortly thereafter he presented an astronomical sphere to the Bescancon Academy.
Though his work was exceptional and highly regarded by his contemporaries, Janvier never attained the position of official clockmaker to the King or any of the Regimes that followed.
