In 1789, the right was granted to every French citizen to meet with his local government official. Given the overwhelming popularity of the new law the regime mandated that each appointment would be limited to 10 minutes. The Pendule d’Audience clocks were thus devised in order to institute a method to remain with the confines of the time allotment.

The present lot is unusual given its diminutive size.
