Produced between 1954 and 1960, the reference 2540 from Patek Philippe was the first square wristwatch to house an automatic movement, the calibre, the 12-600 AT. Despite the case being only 31mm in either direction, the watch wears much larger than this given its square design (circa 44mm diagonally). This unusual case design was made by Ponti Gennari & Cie, Geneva Master Case Makers (Key 26). The watch caries the distinctive double P crown, first introduced on the reference 2526.
The caliber 12-600AT is considered most important and beautiful time-only movement ever, having been introduced in the reference 2526 in 1953 with its unique design and stunning hand engraved 18K rotor. The current example is in excellent condition and is accompanied by an extract from the Patek Philippe Archives.
