Alberto Giacometti

Pair of "Étoile" Table Lamps

designed circa 1935, executed by Diego Giacometti after 1966

patinated bronze, fabric shades

each impressed DIEGO and monogrammed DG

16 1/4 in. (41.3 cm) high each, excluding fittings

10 in. (25.4 cm) diameter of each shade

Overall in excellent condition. This lot is offered together with a certificate of authenticity from the Comité Giacometti for each lamp, which are recorded in the Alberto Giacometti database under numbers 4009 and 4010. The lamps were each additionally impressed AG 042 and AG 043 respectively by the Comité at the time of their authentication. When viewed in person, the patina exhibits subtle brown and olive green hues that enhance the artistic quality of the works. The patinated bronze surfaces of each lamp present with minor surface irregularities which are inherent to the making and characteristic of the artist’s practice. The bronze surfaces throughout present with some discoloration and rubbing to the patina consistent with age, revealing a lustrous bronze undersurface as illustrated in the catalogue photography. The bronze presents with evidence of very minimal oxidation and small verdigris spots concentrated to the legs and recessed areas and consistent with age. One lamp with a more pronounced verdigris spot to the underside, which is not visually distracting when the piece is installed. The contemporary fabric shades are in excellent condition overall. The lamps have been rewired to American standards. Sotheby's does not guarantee electrical components and suggests having all wiring inspected by a licensed electrician. A highly elegant pair of table lamps designed by Alberto and executed by Diego.
