Jean Dunand

"Marabou Stork" Panel

circa 1934

based on the design for the "La Chasse" panel installation from the smoking room of the Normandie ocean liner

lacquered metal, fine cast concrete

49 x 26 1/2 x 1 1/8 in. (124.4 x 67.3 x 3 cm)

Overall in very good condition. The central motif of this superb lacquered panel by Jean Dunand is based on his design for the “La Chasse” panel installation from the smoking room of the Normandie ocean liner. The lacquered surfaces present with variegated hues and beautiful relief details that speak to Dunand’s mastery of the medium. The lacquered surfaces present with light surface scratches and minute, isolated losses to the lacquer concentrated to the outer edges of the panels, which are consistent with gentle handling and not visually distracting. The lacquer presents with evidence of scattered, sensitive inpainting concentrated to the edges and sides of the piece. The red lacquered surfaces with superficial hairlines to the surface concentrated to the edges consistent with age and common for lacquer works by Dunand. The panel includes two period metal hooks at the top of the piece to permit installation, which present with oxidation consistent with age.
