A rare cloisonne enamel censer and cover

Ming dynasty, 16th century

明十六世紀 掐絲琺瑯纏枝蓮紋獅耳熏爐


with a compressed globular body rising to a short waisted neck and galleried mouth-rim, flanked by a pair of lion-masked handles suspending loose rings, brightly decorated around the body with large lotus blooms borne on undulating leafy scrolls, the domed cover enamelled with clusters of green and aubergine grapes borne on stems further issuing colourful foliage, set with three pierced and gilt lotus panels and surmounted by a bud finial

Acquired in China in the 1930s and thence in the family by descent to the present owner.
