Two painted pottery figures of Lokapala

Tang dynasty

唐 陶加彩天王俑兩尊


each supported by a rocky plinth, standing defiantly atop a vanquished demon with one foot on the demon's abdomen and the other actively suppressing the demon's head, the arms accentuating the drama with one hand raised grasping a now-lost weapon and the other dynamically positioned at the opposite side, the muscular body clad in pointed boots, greaves, and multiple tunics beneath military armor, the broad grimacing face framed by an elaborate helmet topped by a phoenix feather, one figure painted in remarkable detail in polychrome and with traces of gilt to the armor, the other figure with scattered traces of white slip and polychrome against the red biscuit (2)
