finely painted in the center with a figure of Budai seated with a joyous expression, his robe decorated with chilong roundels and floral sprigs, surrounded by four puce-enameled blossoming sprays enclosed in a spearhead border, the rim decorated with a ribbon border

A closely related tureen stand, decorated at the rim with floral sprays, sold at Christie's New York, January 23rd, 2001, lot 239. Made to accompany a rare group of tureens and covers in the form of a seated Budai, the present example is one of a select group of Chinese export porcelain made for the European market featuring the iconic Buddhist monk. A very few examples of such Budai tureens are extant. A pair is in the Royal Collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, one of which is illustrated in John Ayers, Chinese and Japanese Works of Art in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, London, 2016, vol. I, cat. no. 747-748. Another example was sold in our Monaco rooms, June 22nd, 1987, lot 1485. One example, painted in the center of the belly with a coat of arms, probably those of Echenique, of Navarra, Spain, sold in our London rooms, May 10th 1998, lot 118.
