Description

An enamel and hardstone snuff box with two-coloured gold mounts, probably German, circa 1840,

oval, the lid set with an oval enamel plaque painted with the Judgement of Solomon, within a chased floral border on a sablé ground, marbled amethyst ground, the sides and underside similarly decorated, apparently unmarked

9.2cm., 3⅝in.wide

The mounts and construction of this box would suggest the box was made in Hanau, or at least in Germany. For a gold and enamel snuff box set with a similar enamel plaque, with fewer protagonists, the box with a maker's mark attributed to Hanau, see Christie's, 29 November 2016, lot 74.
