Description

A parcel-gilt silver, hardstone and enamel clock, probably E. Bako, Paris, early 20th century,

octagonal with elongated sides, the body the of light brown agate, decorated with a geometrical black and red enamel border around the oval dial with Arabic numerals, the reverse with a silver stand and a laurel wreath-shaped suspension loop, French maker's mark EB in a vertical lozenge, serial no. 710, French post-1919 control mark

10.4cm., 4⅛in. wide

Although very little seems to be known about E. Bako so far, he appears to have worked for many of the most important jewellers, such as Cartier and Boucheron. It is possible that the maker of the present lot is the same person as Eugène Paul Bako, who was born on 23 November 1868 in Paris, recorded as a joaillier, and who died on 1 March 1923. For hardstone and enamel boudoir Art Deco clocks by Bako in similar style, some with diamond-set hands, see for example Bonham's San Francisco, 18 April 2005, lot 27; or Bonham's London, 16 September 2008, lot 280.
