Description
A gold-mounted hardstone snuff box
English, circa 1740
rectangular, with tapering sides, the lid and base formed of semi-translucent champagne-coloured agate panels with blush and white inclusions, double bow-shaped thumbpiece, the side engraved with a man's head and shoulders in armour, visor open, the crest of Edwardes, baronets of Shrewsbury,
6.3cm., 2 1/2 in. wide
It is probable that the present box was made for one of Lt. Col. Hope-Edwardes's 18th century Edwardes ancestors rather than himself. Stylistically, this hardstone box must have been made long before the Lt. Col. Hope-Edwardes's birth, which occurred on 16 February 1848. He died on 12 February 1919, leaving an estate valued at £138,900, which today is approximately the equivalent today of £4m.
