Description

Property from a Distinguished Private Collection

A Commonwealth boarded oak 'mural' glass case

mid 17th century

the moulded frieze above two open shelves

48cm. high, 55cm. wide, 16.5cm. deep; 1ft. 7in., 1ft. 9 3/4in., 6 1/2in.

For two hanging 'glass cases' which are of the same form and which feature similar carved detail to each arch see Victor Chinnery, Oak Furniture, The British Tradition, Woodbridge, 2017, p. 293, fig. 3:327 and 3:328.

Chinnery (op. cit.) refers to these sorts of arcaded, open hanging shelves as 'glass cases' based on contemporary 17th century accounts and inventories.  Not only was glass easily damaged, it was expensive and an indication of a family’s wealth so the practical display of these precious household goods would have been an important consideration.

The term mural refers to the fact that these were wall mounted.
