A gold open-faced quarter repeating cylinder watch

Circa 1820, no. 4061

• Movement: gilded full plate, cylinder escapement, the backplate with aperture revealing the escape wheel, plain three-arm balance, fusee and chain, two polished hammers repeating on coiled gongs, signed Fredrik Jürgensen Kiöbenhavn

• Dial: white enamel, Arabic numerals, outer minute ring, blued steel hands, signed Fredrik Jürgensen

• Case: gold, engine-turned back, polished bezel, milled band, pendant locking slide to band between 1 and 2 o'clock, gilt-metal cuvette signed and numbered Fredrik Jürgensen, No. 4061, case back numbered 37

Fredrik Jürgensen was born on 19 August 1787, the second youngest son of Jürgen Jürgensen. In 1801, Fredrik became an apprentice within his father's workshop under the guidance of his elder brother Urban. In April 1809, Fredrik travelled to Geneva. Upon the death of his father, Fredrik was recalled to Copenhagen where he took over the running of the family's business. A Royal Decree of 15 May 1811 appointed Fredrik to the position of Court Horologist, succeeding to the position his father had held. Initially Fredrik continued to sign the company's watches Larpent & Jürgensen, before the firm was re-named Fredrik Jürgensen in 1811. Fredrik died in 1843.
