註:〈鬧天宮〉乃京劇傳統劇目,取自〈西遊記〉第四至七回。孫悟空奪定海神針,鬧瑤池,吃蟠桃,盜金丹,震怒天庭,終被太上老君封於八卦爐內,以三昧真火煉七七四十九日,逃出後竟絲亳無損,反練就火眼金睛,大鬧天宮,將李天王領軍的天將眾神打得落花流水,凱旋歸還花果山。


本幅寫〈鬧天宮〉一幕,畫面紅光一片,白面頭戴紫金冠者居中,自為齊天大聖,天將環伺,白髯老者執圈旁立,應為太上老君手持法寶緊箍圈,可知乃孫悟空從煉丹爐躍出後,風火相交,與諸將激戰之狀,屬林風眠少數描劃兩個角色以上的群戲人物作品。畫中流露立體主義表現手法的痕迹,肢體、臉譜以幾何圖形呈現,粗重的色綫穿插碰撞,以複雜的抽象結構呈現人物關係。背景盡塗朱紅,密不透風,象徵熾熱之烽火氣氖,筆墨強悍恣縱,色彩濃烈,更傾向表現主義式的情感釋放,與早年戲曲人物追求典雅精緻之手法迥然不同。


林風眠一九七七年移居香港,生活與創作環境遽變,既然創作自由無拘束規限,遂激發他放膽探索過往未見繪畫的題材,藉此探索表現手法的種種可能性,故作品風格更趨奔放,色彩更呈鮮麗活潑。証諸本幅美猴王掙脫象徵權威專制束縛桎梏之題旨,筆下無疑是追求創作自由的體現!
