Partially printed document, signed ("John Adams"), being a four-language ship's passport
On paper (402 x 505 mm), [Washington, before 19 December 1800], accomplished in a clerical hand and signed by Adams as president of the United States, countersigned by the Secretary of State ("J. Marshall"), and by the Collector of the Port of Charleston ("James Simons"), also signed by a Charleston notary public, being a pass for the schooner Martha, commanded by Joseph Hudson and bound for Morant Bay, Jamaica with a cargo of provisions and staves, text in four columns, embossed paper seal of the United States, and blind stamp of South Carolina; browned, some chipping and separation along folds, rejoined along center vertical fold, marginal closed tear at left, old repair to verso.
