"Aktaeon" Mask

circa 1932

executed by Royal Copenhagen, Denmark

stoneware with Solfatara glaze

with the maker's blue wave mark

15½ x 14½ x 8⅝ in. (39.3 x 36.8 x 21.8 cm)

Overall in very good condition. When viewed firsthand, the piece presents with superb sculptural quality and exhibits a fantastic use of the Solfatara glaze. The surface of the work presents with minor irregularities to the ceramic body and in glaze application inherent to the making and to the artist’s practice, including minute pinholes which are common for such works and not visually distracting. The lower proper left corner presents with one small shallow chip to the ceramic surface measuring approximately 3/4 x 1/4 in. The back of the head with a hole and two cords to permit installation on a wall, as designed by the artist. This lot has been inspected under black light and presents with no apparent evidence of restoration. A spectacular example of this rare form with stunning presence.
