Born (1959) in Bochum, Germany, Ana Schmidt encountered frequent relocations. Her family moved to Vietnam and then Thailand before her sixth birthday. Throughout her youth, she studied with various art instructors and finally she opted to major in Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Barcelona.

Her studies and experiences with a globalized world provided Schmidt with useful material for her paintings which are characterized by a technical draughtsmanship and a powerful urban imagery, depicting the different realities in contemporary cities, often tough and gritty: “The banal and the impressive coexist in the same territory.”

Schmidt has built up a reputation receiving multiple awards. In 2018 she received the prestigious Columbia Threadneedle Prize for Figurative Art. She also has been awarded with various prizes at the Art Renewal Center Salon. Her works have been exhibited internationally in individual and group exhibitions, among others at the Mall Galleries of the Federation of British Artists in central London, at the Salmagundi Club in New York, at NordArt in Germany, at the European Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona, at Art Revolution Taipei in Taiwan and during the Venice Biennale in Italy. Currently she lives and works as an artist and urban planning architect in Bilbao, Spain. Ana Schmidt is represented by the gallery Ojos del Barroco in Malaga, Spain. Her paintings are in private and public collections including the Threadneedle Collection in London and in private collections in Venice, New York, London and Taipei among others.
